1889-1943Nacido en San Diego, William S. Van Dyke fue actor infantil, tanto de vodevil como, despues, de cine. No nos encontramos ante un realizador genial y creativo sino, por el contrario, ante un hombre con un alto grado de profesionalidad, minucioso, incapaz de estropear una buena historia y, en muchos casos, perfectamente capaz de elevarla por encima de su nivel. No es de extranar, en consecuencia, la buena imagen que tuvo siempre dentro del mundo de Ho llywood, que premio sus buenos oficios con dos Os car, el primero por La cena de los acusados (The Thin Man, 1934) y el segundo por San Francisco (1936).Uno de sus grandes exitos lo obtuvo precisamente con La cena de los acusados, ba sada en la ultima novela de Dashiell Hammett, que es el origen de hasta cinco secuelas, de las que las tres inmediatamente siguientes llevan tambien la firma de Van Dyke.
